Why the Campaign?
Nigeria has a big youth population, more than 65% of the population. According to the World Bank, in a recent report, developing countries which invest in better education and job training for their record numbers of young people between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age could produce surging economic growth and sharply reduced poverty. The future prosperity of our country depends, therefore, on the education and training we give the youth today.
“If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.” Chinese Proverb
According to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, 60% of our graduates are not employable. “Today, we need a combination of a good education and industry relevant training. Ideally the first is given by a publicly funded institution such as a university. The second is best provided by a private entity which is market responsive and industry oriented.” Kiran Karnik, Former Executive President, Nasscom. The Campaign provides this market responsive and industry oriented leadership.
Less than 5% of our youth population has access to global quality education with work or business ready skills. To reduce poverty, improve social mobility and prevent disruptive social tensions, quality education and training need to be democratized to reach the remaining 95% in good time.
"There are two fundamental equalizers in life: the Internet and education. E-learning eliminates the barriers of time and distance, creating universal, learning-on-demand opportunities for people, companies and countries “John Chambers, Chairman and CEO, Cisco Systems
